THE TOWER WALK

About the Tower Walk

At its most fundamental level, the Tower Walk reorientates the campus to return the focus to the Tower as the central symbolic and functional heart of our community.

Originally conceived as a seminary, the Tower housed both chapel and living quarters for its first inhabitants, and has since welcomed generations of Brothers, boarders, and staff.

The building is positioned to look across the creek to Glenlyon Drive with the ‘arms’ of the rear courtyard reaching out to the rest of the campus.

Effectively a shared walk and wide stairway generous enough to be used as informal seating, the Tower Walk connects the buildings (existing and planned) that fringe Matthew Hayden Oval.

From an aesthetic point of view, it can be likened to the impact of Hausmann’s boulevards on the city of Paris – providing a view through to the Tower – or the quadrangles and cloisters of ancient university campuses in its provision of loitering places.

Amongst the most potent gifts of a Marist College Ashgrove education are the enduring friendships that grow out of shared experiences. Often these are strictly year group based while spaces like the Tower Walk provide opportunities for other connections to form between boys of different ages.

The Tower Walk plays a critical role in linking indoor and outdoor spaces and creating new zones of activity and interaction.

It will be constructed in stages, and each will have its own character thanks to its immediate environment and particular purpose.
